Data Science in E-commerce

In the current growth of the digital economy, we know that the total population of Indonesian citizens will reach 274 more billion people in 2021, with a total of more than 200 billion internet users on their mobile devices (Data sourced from Hootsuite and Graphic Asia Briefing Ltd.). This is because one soul may have more than one mobile device. In addition, active citizens on social media reach more than 170 billion people. Social media can be used in any form, including in the economic field, such as buying and selling transactions. So, this significantly influences the growth in e-commerce or buying and selling transactions in this digital or electronic world. According to Widowati (2019), Indonesia is one of the fastest-growing countries in digital economic growth. Yes, we can see from the total population active on social media. Even countries worldwide are also aware that Indonesia has social media users known for their activeness.
According to Katadata (2019), e-commerce transactions in Indonesia reached IDR 140 trillion. We can imagine during the COVID-19 pandemic when our movements were restricted, so we inevitably had to make transactions online to avoid direct contact. E-commerce revenue in Indonesia can increase by 33% compared to the previous year. What a wonderful thing.
The growing number of e-commerce platforms in Indonesia, such as Amazon, Alibaba, Bibli, Bukalapak, Jdid, Lazada, Shopee, and Tokopedia, also supports this. From each of these platforms, ecommerceiq[dot]asia stated that the highest sales were in the mobile and electronics category, followed by fashion and beauty, then health and wellness. In addition, compiled from local data, it turns out that the highest number of internet users are in the millennial generation, followed by the new Z generation, then the X generation. We can conclude that this is because the younger generation is indeed more active and understands social media or is even more, internet literate than the previous generation.

Then, where will the role of Data Science be?

We must understand that Data Science is multidisciplinary (Tierney, 2012). Data science covers various fields, such as statistics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, data mining, pattern recognition, visualization, databases, data processing, and so on. Of course, moving in a circle based on business analysis, business strategy, knowledge, communication, and presentations to the problem-solving process.

We also need to know that this series of data science includes:

  1. Data collection and storage
  2. Data Preparation
  3. Exploration and visualization
  4. Experiments and predictions

So, the data collected from existing digital transaction processes can be used to obtain current descriptions or even predictions for the future. We can predict or group transactions that have been running. Because basically, data can do various things, such as:

  1. Describe the current state of an organization, company, or process.
  2. Detect anomalous activity.
  3. Diagnosing the causes of activity and behavior (recommendations).
  4. Predict future activity.

This knowledge is like shamanism which can make predictions, but because it is based on factual data and existing knowledge, the level of accuracy is higher and more accurate. In addition, this digital transaction data can be combined with other data sets that can support the accuracy of the data and the development of these solutions.

Data science is a topic that is currently popular among the public, not only in Indonesia but even in the world. It has become a hot topic of discussion and a form of the rapid development of the world of technology.
