Windows Operating Systems
Thebestindonesia.com – The Windows operating system is a system that can perform multitasking processes, where it can run two or more application programs without disturbing each other.
Here are some windows functions that can be obtained for computer users:
- With windows, we can run specific application programs every day.
- With windows, we can group applications simultaneously and easily switch between jobs.
- With Windows, people can move data using the existing clipboard in the Windows system using existing facilities.
Window types and their applications
In the Windows system, there are three types of windows, namely:
1. Active Window
It is an application window or window group currently active but not in maximum conditions.
2. Maximized Window
Is the application window or window group that is active in maximum display conditions (the active Window can be maximized by pressing the top button in the upper right corner of the Window)
3. Minimized Window
It is an application window or window group active in minimum conditions and is indicated by an icon corresponding to the application or group that is minimized. An application can still be functional under minimum requirements; in this case the application is known as Background Execution.
As we discussed earlier, people can use program applications simultaneously with the Windows system. For that, there are several types of applications that can run under the window system, namely:
- Windows Applications An application program specifically designed for Windows can only be run under Windows. Example: Microsoft Office applications.
- Older Windows Applications Is an application program designed for windows before version 3.0.
- Non-Windows Applications
It is an application program designed for the DOS operating system. Most of the application programs can be run under the Windows system. Example: the Norton Commander (NC) program.
4. Memory Resident Program
Programs of this type are classified as Non-Windows Applications, but their nature differs from other application programs. This program memory resident will stay in memory every time a program of this type is executed.
Cursor Shape
In implementing the windowing system, dialogue between humans and computers is realized through certain symbols.
The purpose of the Mouse: is to tell the user that at any time, he can resize the dynamic Window and drag it to another location, and when he can’t change it, a particular sign appears on the screen telling the user whether or not he can he was doing at that time.

The user understands several terms in using the Mouse for windows operation, namely:
1. Click
What is meant by this clicking process is pressing the left mouse button once and quickly releasing it?
2. Double-Click
He presses the left mouse button twice and quickly releases it.
3. Drag and Drop
What is meant by the dragging and dropping process is pressing the left mouse button while moving the Mouse to a particular place and then releasing it.
4. Point
The pointing process brings the mouse pointer to a specific part of the desired Window.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Window Systems
The benefits that can be obtained by utilizing the window system are as follows:
- Appearance of more information. The windowing system allows a user to display different information in each Window. So that, at the same time, he can see various information from one another.
- Access to many sources of information. Because the windowing system can display different amounts of data, each in a separate window, at the same time, users can simultaneously access other sources of information. This information can be in the form of numerical data or graphical information that can be carried out by various software.
- Combining various sources of information. Because a user can access multiple sources of information, he can combine sources of information to obtain a unified whole of knowledge.
- Free control over several programs. Can control the activities of various sources of information that appear from multiple schedules so that one program and another do not interfere.
- Reminder. With a window that displays time information, the user will constantly be reminded when he has to stop his activities and when he has to work again.
- Context command. The window can indicate the existence of a comment context, namely the presence of various controls and buttons that have different interpretations so that we can create more modular programs.
- Plural presentation. Windows in a window system, especially those using two-dimensional and two-and-a-half-dimensional windows, can display various information from a program that is running.
Disadvantages of Windowing Systems:
- The windowing system must be operated in graphical mode.
- A windowing system will require a large capacity for visual information.
- Graphical solutions require a large enough resolution with large memory.
- The speed of the windowing system depends on the size of the memory capacity.
Based on the advantages and disadvantages of the window system, it does not mean that this window system is less desirable. Even today, the Windows system continues to experience development. The increasing number of application programs under this operating system proves this.
